THE SYMMETRICAL MICROPHONE CAPSULE AND THE QUEST FOR THE PERFECT "ACCOUSTIC WINDOW"
The microphone, as the very first link in the chain is the most important part of the recording and reproduction process. As such, it ought to be as neutral as possible, an "acoustic window" neither adding to nor subtracting from the original. However microphones can introduce noise and other non-linearities and distort the original signal. We will look (and listen) at these distortions and show how a symmetrical transducer can minimise these non-linearities and more closely approach that ideal "acoustic window".
